Spring Is The Start Of Drowning Season
We are nearing our next spring and summer season, which is also the start of drowning season. Last summer had a record-breaking number of drownings, with a total of 91 fatal drownings recorded in Texas, and this not include the many near drownings. Tarrant and Harrison Counties took the top spots and most of these drownings were preventable.
Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1 to 4, and the second leading cause for kids ages 1-14 in Texas. In other words, it's time to learn how to swim! There are many places that teach lessons around the DFW area. Not all swim lessons are expensive and some swim lesson providers offer scholarships. If you qualify financially, you may get those lessons at no or little cost to you. One that we know of is Sigma Swimming.
One of the coaches we spoke with at Sigma Swim: "We speak to our swimmers about water safety, and you will be surprised how many children don’t know what to do and what not to do in an emergency. When the children are asked what they would do if they see another child or friend in trouble at the pool, the answers are troubling and scary. They tell us that they would try to save them by trying to pull them out, and this could have fatal consequences. Therefore, we talk to our swimmers, and teach them what they can do to save that child in trouble in a safe way, and not to become a drowning victim."
Some might say, “My child is safe, because they are always being watched “, and guess what? The 91 drownings this past summer could have been prevented, because most those parents never thought it could happen to them, but sadly it did.
Here are two videos every parent should watch because your life can be turned upside down in a flash:
This video shows how quickly childhood drownings occur. They occur with virtually no warning, and they take place incredibly quickly, and they are very silent as shown in the video. The mother didn’t even know her son was in the pool, and he had been under water for over five minutes. This shows that if you have an outdoor pool and young children, then you must make sure the pool is always properly secured and your children are properly educated.
The second video below shows how quick, how silent, and how uneducated people are on drowning. These are real people who truly gave their real opinions and thoughts on drownings. Some parents even failed to realize that a child was under water. You see one parent who even says that she thought drowning was loud, and that you could easily spot it.
So, now that you have watched the two videos, take the time to find out about local swim providers in your area and schedule your child's lessons. Children get vaccinated to prevent diseases, or wear helmets when riding a bike to prevent injuries. Swim lessons are a lifesaving skill, and swimming has many health benefits. Also, please remember just because your child is in swim lessons, it will not make your child drown proof. Put those electronic devices down when venturing out to a pool, lake, river, or ocean in the upcoming swim season. Always remember to use coast guard approved floatation devises, and be at arm’s length of your child, especially when not wearing any coast guard approved floatation devises. Also, don’t assume just because there are other adults in or around the water that they will see a child in trouble, because most of the time, they will not be able to spot that child in trouble. "Lifeguard your child!"
